NEKOMIMI - CATGIRL

HADUKI 葉月
(Tsukuyomi〜Moon Phase)

Japanese otakus aren't the only ones who love feline humans, but while their counterparts in the US ogle over whips and Catwoman, the otaku's nekomimi (which literally means "cat ears") is somewhat less kinky.

Generally, the nekomimi--or "neko-musume" (catgirl) as she is sometimes called--has feline traits resembling more of a kitten: innocent, inquisitive, playful and a tad mischievous.

She may appear in the following variations:

  • A girl or humanoid with real cat ears and tail.
  • A girl who transforms into a cat girl;
  • A girl who wears accessories or a headpiece that resembles cat ears;

For decades, manga artists have been applying catlike features to their characters (albeit momentarily) for comical effect. However, in the '90s, the nekomimi came into her own as the "moe" character we know today. Along the way, she also picked up some new (and more permanent) features, like the double tooth, mittens (for her front paws), and clothes hemmed with scarf and pom-poms.

So long as the nekomimi has features that resemble a cat, she need not necessarily be one. Instead, she can have ears belonging to a fox, dog, racoon dog--even elfin ears, horns, and in the case of robots, antennas.

Examples

DI GI CHARAT デ・ジ・キャラット (Di Gi Charat)

Her real name is Chocola but everyone calls her Degiko. And she's actually a princess from the planet Di Gi Charat. Digiko is intent on becoming a star and is currently working her way up as the mascot for the GAMERS shop outlets in Akihabara. Careless, sly, and impertinent despite looking irresistably cute. Her favourite food is broccoli.

TARUTO たると (Magical Nyan Nyan Taruto)

Taruto's an innocent and childlike kitten-girl who thinks she's a legendary princess. Her friends don't take her seriously, so she's determined to work on her magic skills to prove them wrong. But if she does become a princess, that means she'll have to leave her beloved master Iori....

MOMOMIYA ICHIGO 桃宮いちご (Tokyo Mew Mew)

When Ichigo's DNA gets scrambled with that of an Iriomote mountain cat, she acquires the power to transform into Mew Ichigo, a superheroine with not just unique abilities but also the physical features of a cat.

NENEKO ねねこ (Yumeria)

Neneko's coif is shaped like cat ears, with corners that twitch in response to her thoughts. She's always out searching for mysteries, calls protagonist Tomokazu her "darling", and skips about town singing "na no da na no da na no na no da~". Cute.

NANO NANO PUDDING ナノナノ・プディング (Galaxy Angel II)

Nano Nano Pudding's a member of the Rune Angel Brigade, and a nanomachine that possesses human consciousness. The girl with a pointy ear-like antenna and a tail is as playful as a kitten.
