MIKO (SHRINE MAIDEN)

FUKUSHIMIA KINU •Ÿ“‡Œ¦
(Raimuiro Senkitan)

The Japanese shrine-maiden--dressed in white upper garment and a red skirt--has always been the shaman in Japan's Shinto religion. She is the spiritual link between the gods and the people, delivering divine messages by allowing herself to be possessed by the gods. Since the '90s, however, the miko has become a "moe" symbol for Japan's otaku culture.

In the modern world, she continues to exude the qualities of the ideal Japanese woman (the "yamato nadesico"), imagined as a mysteriously beautiful and serene young woman with long black hair.

One of the most popular type of miko is the Battle Miko, an action heroine who's pure and virgin, and possesses supernatural powers to fight all forms of evil (Asagiri no Miko, Sailor Moon, Silent Moebius, Raimiro no Senkitan).

The miko heroine features heavily in fantasy games and anime/manga too, though without her trademark red and white outfit (Samurai Spirits, Simoun, Ar tonelico, Tales of Symphonia).

Examples

HIEDA YUZU •B“c—MŽq (Asagiri no Miko)

Yuzu, a shrine maiden in the Hieda Clan, has a crush on her cousin and childhood playmate Tadahiro. When he becomes the target of evil gods, she is tasked with recruiting her fellow classmates into her clan's gMiko Councilh to fight the threat.

NAKORURU ƒiƒRƒ‹ƒ‹ (Samurai Spirits)

The ever-popular heroine from SNK's action/fighting game Samurai Spirits, is a shamaness from Japan's indigenous Ainu tribe. Together with her pet hawk Mamahaha and wolf Shikuruu, the pretty and free-spirited young girl fights to protect mother nature. Possibly one of the most recognisible mikos in otaku culture, Nakoruru's legion of followers include gamers, anime fans, and cosplayers; and she has appeared in countless doujin works since 1993. Incidentally, Nakoruru also happens to be the girl in the FREETYPE banner.... (^^);

HINO REI ‰Î–샌ƒC (Bishoujo Senshi Sailor Moon)

Rei transforms into Sailor Mars. Her grandfather is a Shinto priest while she helps out at the family's shrine as a miko. As Sailor Mars, Rei battles her enemies using powerful paper charms and incantations. Her long, black hair is typical of the miko stereotype.

KAMIYAMA MIKO_ŽR‚Ý‚± (Kakyuusei)

The protagonist's classmate and a miko at her family's Shinto shrine. The only child in the family, Miko's upbringing is rigorous: she's given a strict curfew and isn't allow to mix with the opposite sex. As a result, she appears distant and aloof.
