THE KID SISTER
Nothing melts the heart like a kid sister sweetly calling you "onii-chan" (big brother). Along with the childhood friend, the "kid sister" is one of the most common bishoujo character around. She's loved for her usually bright, bubbly character. She may worship you or bicker with everything you have to say (well, which sibling doesn't?). But there's no doubt that she loves her big brother more than anyone else on earth. Perhaps, just too much to be considered normal. And because both of you understand that, the pangs of guilt continues to come between the two of you. But then again, the story wouldn't be interesting if it didn't, would it? The kid sister may appear in the following variations:
Incest is a tricky issue to deal with (even by Japanese standards), more so if blood-related siblings are involved. While you can still find physical relationships involving blood siblings in adult gal game titles, more often than not, it's usually a step-sister/adopted sister who's featured. The mainstream media is even more discreet about this, though there are exceptions. YOSHIDA Motoi's manga Koikaze--which was later adapted for a TV-anime series--revolved around the incestuous relationship of two blood siblings, 28-year-old Koushirou and his 15-year-old sister Nanoka.

![]() NARUSAWA YUI 鳴沢唯 (Doukyuusei 2) A pioneer in the "kid sister" heroine as we know today. Ironically, Yui isn't the protagonist's sister at all, but grew up with him after she and her mother moved in to live with his family. She calls him her "onii-chan"--a phrase quickly embraced by a whole generation of otakus. |
![]() KAREN 可憐 (Sister Princess) "Kid sister" fever swept Japan a few years ago with Media Work's Sister Princess--a set of innocent, fairytale-like stories about 12 sisters and their love for the same big brother. First serialised in the Dengeki G's magazine, Sister Princess quickly became a runaway success that led to several console games and two TV-anime adaptations. |
![]() TOUDOU KANA 藤堂加奈 (Kana 〜 Imouto 〜) D.O.'s heart-wrenching love story about a brother and his terminally-ill sister. The 1999 gal game left such an impression that not only a remake was released in 2004 (this time for the mainstream market), but it also sparked rumours that the Korean drama "Autumn in My Heart" stole the game's story idea. |
