THE ROBOT GIRL There's nothing new about anime's fixation with robotic women--Maeter, MATSUMOTO Leiji's blonde heroine in Galaxy Express 999, wasn't human; and neither was TEZUKA Osamu's Mitchy in his satirical Metropolis. But it's only in the past decade or so that the female robot has become the darling of otaku culture, with the 'robot maid' being its most popular incarnation. The robot girl looks and behaves like a normal human; even if she doesn't, you can be sure she'll acquire human emotional faculties (like love, grief, and jealousy) along the way. Her story is often about her quest for humanity, as well as her deep-seated desire to be human so she can be with the man she loves. In many ways, the robot girl is the female embodiment of the modern-day Pinocchio. The robot girl doesn't necessarily be machine. In KATSURA Masakazu's Video Girl Ai, Ai, a program in a videotape, falls for the down-and-out Youta despite knowing that it's forbidden for her to love a human. Likewise, heroine MIZUSAKA Ren (aka the Wired Ghost) in Baldr Force appears in the story as a virtual entity.

 CHII チィ (Chobits) When Hideki first discovers Chii in a garbage dump, she has no recollection of her past and a vocabulary of only the word 'chii'. Unknown to Hideki, Chii's an extremely advanced personal computer who's searching for the "person just for her"--and he might just be the one. |
