FRENCH MAID ASAHINA MIKURU 朝比奈みくる (Suzumiya Haruhi no Yuuutsu) She's the mascot of "otakuism"; that bosomy beauty in a white apron and a frilly dress short enough to reveal all whenever she bends over. Oui, the "french maid" is now immortalised in Akihabara culture (not to mention maid cafes). She's the perfect fantasy--a well-endowed woman in a clingy dress trimmed with white lace; she's submissive, obidient, and addresses you as "goshujin-sama" (master). She's ready to rub your ego and satisfy your every whim and fancy. The french maid gives the meaning "live to serve" a whole new dimension. Moreover, she may not even be a maid by profession, but that doesn't mean she can't dress up as one from time to time (Taeko in Ai Yori Aoshi, ASAHINA Mikuru in Suzumiya Haruhi no Yuuutsu). The french maid may appear in the following variations: The ever-popular Robot Maid who isn't human but a robot or android; A resident maid in a mansion the protagonist visits; him being a guest, it's her duty to ensure that all his needs are attended to--whatever they are; A live-in maid who stays with the protagonist. In the case of the "harem" genre, it's usually several of them; The Killer Maid. Not satisfied with demure types? Why not have one who you can literally die for? Assassins, battle androids, ninjas, you know, the type that'd fit right into a Kill Bill movie. One of the earliest gal games that contributed to the french maid boom was C's ware's Kindan no Ketsuzoku (released in 1993 for the PC-98). Like many adult gal games that followed, it typcast the french maid as a young heroine driven to servitude (usually sexual) by ill fortune. Later in the '90s, the french maid took on a cuter, more fashionable image with games like Pia Carrot e Youkoso!! (waitresses in "maid type" uniforms) and To Heart (robot maid). This image is perpetuated in most mainstream manga and anime as well, but in gal games--especially the more hardcore genres--her role as a sex slave or harlot hasn't changed much (Nagisa in MAID iN HEAVEN).

SAWATARI IZUMI/MITSUKI 沢渡いずみ/みつき (Kore ga Watashi no Goshujin-sama) Runaway girls find shelter in millionaire Yoshitaka's mansion as live-in maids--which is all very good for 14-year-old Yoshitaka, who has a maid fetish. The short-tempered Izumi isn't too impressed with his unhealthy obsession, but her younger sister Mitsuki doesn't seem too perturbed.

OOHARA MIREI 大原魅麗 (Elysion〜Eternal Sanctuary〜) A 19th century mansion on the secluded island of Santa Maria, far from the madding world. A young doctor who's hired to take care of its aging owner finds himself not just the caretaker of four beautiful maids, but also the unwitting participant in a grand conspiracy.

ROBERTA (Black Lagoon) If you ever need a maid to clear a place up, she's definitely the one. Roberta is an ex-FARC guerilla and killing machine who finds refuge with the Labrese family as bodyguard and maid. When the young Gracia Labrese is kidnapped, she decides to go on a rampage in search of him. One mean maid with--two capital M's.
