CHILDHOOD FRIEND

TSUKISHIMA KOKO 月島小恋

Whether she's the girl next door, an old childhood acquaintance, or even a distant cousin, the "osananajimi"--or "childhood friend"--is, without doubt, the most popular heroine.

She's the type who lives next door (or somewhere near your place), and drops by every morning to rattle you from your sleep; she's either adores you like a big brother or takes care of you like your big sister; she may be a gentle and protective or a real pain in the butt. Often, she has feelings for you, but either she's too shy/stubborn to confess, or you're just too daft to notice at all.

THe childhood friend usually appear in the following variations:

  • A girl-next-door who wakes you up every morning and goes to school with the protagonist;
  • A girl who’s bound to you by a childhood memory or secret both she and the protagonist share. It’s not uncommon for either one (usually the guy) to have forgotten it;
  • A childhood playmate from whom the protagonist were separated from years ago and now reunited with;
  • A distant cousin with whom the protagonist spent part of your childhood with.

The childhood friend is popular possibly because her chemistry with the protagonist is spontaneous right from the start. There's no need to develop it first since both already know each other well enough right from the start. Of course, that also means the story has to to relate their past before it can further develop on their relationship. This gives the character greater depth than others--and makes her a prime choice as the main heroine in any story.

UZUHARA KONOMI 柚原 このみ (To Heart 2)

Konomi is Takaaki's neighbour and childhood friend. She's a year younger than him and behaves even younger, always acting naively and taking advantage of him. Her father works in the Japanese Self-Defense Force.

HINOMOTO HIKARI 陽ノ下 光 (Tokimeki Memorial 2)

She and the protagonist were childhood playmates until his family moved out of town. Years later, he's now back and is in the same senior high school as her. Unknown to the protagonist, she still keeps a little memento of their childhood time together.

MINASE NAYUKI 水瀬名雪 (Kanon)

Yuuichi's distant relative whom he is reunited with after he moves in to live with her and her mother in their snow-covered town. Nayuki is very fond of him, but he's somewhat aloof to her feelings.
