The late manga creator ISHINOMORI Shoutarou--considered by many to be the "King of Manga"--has produced some timeless hits in his prolific and illustrious career: favourites that include Kamen Rider, Jinzou Ningen Kikaider and Cyborg 009.

With The Skull Man , a 100-page standalone story that came out in 1970, Ishinomori also created manga's first anti-hero. And BONES has now adapted what is probably Ishinomori's darkest work into a dark and gritty animated series, scheduled to air in Japan this April.

Having left Ootomo City years ago, freelance journalist MIKOGAMI Hayato is lured back to his hometown by the potential scoop on an urban legend known as "The Skull Man". A string of violent incidents in the city have all been linked to this mysterious figure, and Mikogami--along with rookie camerawoman MAMIYA Kiriko--are determined to unveil the secrets behind this dark vigilante who walks a thin line between keeping his humanity and quenching his thirst for vengeance.

Superhero shows in Japan have often been the inspiration for kids and teenage fantasies. The Skull Man, however, is geared towards a more matured audience, and BONES have assembled an impressive team of veterans from the anime business to work of this project, including screenwriters OONOGI Hiroshi (Macross Zero, RahXephon, Symphonic Poem Eureka Seven) and MINAKAMI Seishi (Paprika, Paranoia Agent, Yomigaeru Sora - RESCUE WINGS), IZUBUCHI Yutaka (RahXephon, Mobile Police Patlabor, Kamen Rider The First ) and KUSANAGI Takuhito (Blue Submarine 6, Samurai 7, Kamen Rider Agito ).

Skull Man begins airing on Fuji Television from 28 Apr 2007. To promote the series, Fuji Television will also air a live-action special on 21 April 2007.
